Natural smokeless anthracite
Our anthracite is deep-mined, hard coal that burns with a low flame, very little smoke and low ash. It gives a long, steady heat and is suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas. It is a good choice for multi-fuel stoves, Rayburns and boilers.
It is delivered loose in 50kg bags, ready to tip into your coal bunker. If you don’t have a coal bunker, we’ll pre-pack it into 25kg bags so you can stack it wherever is convenient.
What happened to house coal?
Since 1 May 2023 it has been illegal to sell traditional house coal (bituminous coal) for use in homes in England. If you used to burn house coal, our team can recommend the right smokeless alternative for your fire or stove.

Coal & smokeless fuel: your questions
Can I still buy house coal?
No. Since 1 May 2023 it has been illegal to sell traditional house coal (bituminous coal) for use in homes in England. Natural smokeless anthracite is a cleaner-burning alternative, and we can recommend the right fuel for your fire or stove.
What fuel should I use on an open fire?
Use a smokeless fuel that is suitable for open fires. Call us on 01202 718 883, tell us about your fireplace, and we’ll recommend the right product.
What fuel suits a multi-fuel stove?
Natural smokeless anthracite is a good choice. It burns with a low flame, very little smoke and low ash, and gives a long, steady heat. It also suits Rayburns and boilers. Seasoned hardwood logs burn well in a multi-fuel stove too.
What is a Smoke Control Area?
An area, set by your local council, where smoke must not come from a chimney unless you burn an authorised fuel or use an exempt appliance. Your council can tell you whether your home is in one. Our natural smokeless anthracite is suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas.
How is coal delivered?
In loose 50kg bags that can be tipped into your coal bunker, or in pre-packed 25kg bags if you don’t have a bunker. Call 01202 718 883 for a no obligation quote.
